A brother has asked if there is any evidence that JND ever visited the Vatican library, to look at the manuscripts contained there, for his work in translating the Bible. Or would he have simply been using the Codex Vaticanus listed in the contents of his library? Does anyone have relevant references?

The most recent and probably the most comprehensive account of the Codex Vaticanus is by An-Ting Yi, From Erasmus to Maius: The History of Codex Vaticanus in New Testament Textual Scholarship (Taipei, 2023). The work is An-Ting Yi's PhD thesis which he successfully submitted to Vrije University, Amsterdam. If Darby had consulted the Codex, Yi would have mentioned it somewhere in the 600 pages of his book, but he does not. Cardinal Maius's revised edition of the MS was published in 1859 and therefore was available for JND to use.   Timothy Stunt
